FROM WITHIN

Zdzisław Beksiński (1929-2005), is one of the most recognisable Polish painters of the 20th century. To this day, his surrealist, visionary painting arouses wide interest among audiences and remains an inspiration for successive generations of artists. For a decade – between 1987 and 1997 – Beksiński documented his family life and artistic process on video. FROM WITHIN consists in its entirety of footage shot by the artist himself and his immediate family. This unique, intimate journal, is at once a chronicle of social changes in Poland, the fall of communism and the first years of democracy.

The makers have tried to remain objective chroniclers of the approximately 300 hours of video material that Beksiński left behind him. FROM WITHIN can be seen as the artist's last work, a last attempt to stand up to the relentless passage of time

The structure of the festival

The festival structure consists of a big annual event held over two days, with a series of qualifying stages held throughout the year to select the best work by live voting by judges.

The qualifying stages are held every four months and consist of private screenings that are only available to the judges. The films are selected based on a rigorous submission process, and the top entries are screened during the qualifying stages. The judges vote on each film based on criteria such as originality, creativity, technical execution, and emotional impact.

The top films from each qualifying stage are then announced and screened during the big annual event that takes place over three days. The festival attracts a large audience of film enthusiasts, industry professionals, and media representatives from around the world.

During the three-day event, attendees have the opportunity to watch the selected films, attend workshops and panel discussions, and meet with the filmmakers. The event culminates with an awards ceremony honoring the best entries across categories such as Best Feature Film and Best Short Film.

The festival structure not only allows for the recognition of the best work by talented filmmakers but also provides a platform for networking, learning, and career development. The event serves as a celebration of the art of cinema and a showcase of the best works of the year, bringing together filmmakers, industry professionals, and film enthusiasts in a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere.
